Will the ‘Hey, You Suck’ Chant Return?

Prior to the hiring of Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan, Gary Glitter’s Rock and Roll v2.0 song was known for being played at FedExField during games the teams were winning it. Since the hirings, the song which would result in fans chanting “You Suck” after the “hey” part, has disappeared.

The song, which is notorious for being sung a cappella style at the University of Maryland (since the band was banned from playing it), has been something Redskins fans have enjoyed doing over the last couple of years to opposing teams.

Before kickoff, after Redskins touchdowns, sacks on important third downs, and other big plays, the stadium would play the song which would cause an eruption of “You Suck’s” from the fans. Not only was it deafening in the stadium, but it was so loud that you could hear it crystal clear on both radio and television.

Since Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan have been hired, the song has not been played once. Due to how poor the team has been played of, it does make some sense, but the question arises whether the song will be played or not when the team hopefully turns things around.

With an even more promising defense hitting the field in 2012, and clearly the offense should be light years ahead, so the odds of the Redskins starting to do good again are drastically increasing.

Not all fans agree with the chant, and believe it’s stupid, which I can agree with when the team is doing poor. After all, how can you make fun of another team, when your team itself isn’t doing so well? However, what about when they do well? Getting inside the heads of the other football team can do quite a job. If you remember the 2005 game against Dallas at home, the chants were so bad it got into Keyshawn Johnson’s head multiple times. Resulting in outburst on both the sideline and the field.

Every team in the NFL has a unique chant their fanbases done. Such as the “IN-COM-PLETE” in Denver, “J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS” in New York, “WHO DAT SAID THEY GON BEAT DEM SAINTS” in New Orleans, “HERE WE GO STEELERS HERE WE GO” in Pittsburgh, etc.

Besides the Redskins Fight Song, shouldn’t the Redskins have something unique to chant at opposing teams? After all, most chants other teams do at their home stadium are to get into the other teams head, verses praising / pumping up their team for scoring a touchdown (which is what “Hail to the Redskins” does).
