Kirk Cousins Pick Causes Controversy
- Updated: May 1, 2012
After drafting Heisman winning quarterback, Robert Griffin III, the Washington Redskins went on to draft another quarterback, Kirk Cousins in the fourth. Leading some to speculate a QB controversy will brew in Washington.
During Robert Griffin III’s press conference on FedExField Saturday, he was asked about Kirk Cousins joining the team. This is what he had to say:
“I mean, me and Kirk had a long-distance relationship in college because you know I watched him on TV. Besides from that, we were in the same group at the Combine so I got to know him a little bit. He’s a good guy and I look forward to going out there and growing with him.”
From that alone, it doesn’t seem like Griffin is upset Kirk was drafted by the Redskins, in fact, it sounds like he’s looking forward to playing football with him.
So why are certain members of the media trying to stir up trouble? Are they hoping their comments will indeed start a controversy in D.C? Such as how some claim the Civil War started (people talking about war).
This isn’t an ‘I like Sonny’ or ‘I like Billy’ situation; these are not two NFL caliber starters. One has the potential to start early in the season (Griffin), while the other has grooming to do (Cousins).
Is it such a bad thing to have a legitimate backup QB? Something the Redskins have not had for quite some time. Some say the next best thing behind a strong QB, is another strong QB. We see that same scenario all over the NFL, so why is it such a problem in Washington D.C?
Skip Bayless of course had to chime on with his trolling:
“I have been obviously driving the RGIII bandwagon since about mid-season. And he didn’t deserve this kind of pressure heaped on top of the obvious pressure that he will already feel as the No. 2 overall pick… Kirk Cousins is more NFL ready right now than RGIII, who was a late bloomer… So now you’ve drafted another rookie who’s not a black quarterback, and it sets up wrong for RGIII on a racial component level. I’m sorry. It just does.”
I really don’t know what to make of his comments. In one way it seems as if he’s upset Kirk is probably going to be a backup to Robert Griffin III his entire NFL career, but on the other hand it seems as if he’s upset he wasn’t drafted in the first or second round, let alone has to be the backup to a black QB.
To be honest, if anyone has the upper hand, it is indeed Griffin. He’s been labeled the savior, has had fans buying his jersey before he was even drafted by the team, and has completely taken over the Metropolitan area.
On top of that, if Robert Griffin III can’t handle a little competition to earn his starting role as the quarterback of the Washington Redskins, I might honestly not want him to be here. He needs to earn the position, and if that results in Cousins beating him out, so be it. That just means Cousins was indeed the better QB as he has claimed.
My question is, has anyone thought for once that maybe, just maybe they’re using Kirk Cousins as trade bait? New England did it with Matt Cassel; the Eagles did it with Kevin Kolb. They were all made out to be geniuses with what they got in return. Perhaps this is what the Redskins are counting on?
Editors Update:
I Don’t typically like to come out here and just rant, but this time I can’t stop myself.
For a guy like Skip Bayless, with the platform he has, to just go out on National TV and attempt to create any type of story like this is absurd. I could maybe see this being a story in the middle of camp, or perhaps after a preseason game where Griffin got outplayed by Cousins. However, to just come out stirring the pot like this a few days after RG3 was drafted 2nd overall is one of the more unprofessional things he has done.
Frankly I am disappointed that ESPN would even allow this type of garbage to be said on the air. To come out and say you disagree with the pick is one thing, but to say that there are racist motivations is just flat stupid.
Mike Shanahan is so racist that he traded 3 years worth of number one pics and this years second pick to select Griffin 2nd overall?
Seriously Skip do you expect anyone to believe that Shanahan would trade that much to move up and get a black QB only to impose his racist will on said QB and bench him for a 4th round guy just because he is white?
Way to stir the pot Skip… you trolled us all.

I don’t mind the pick for a few reasons:
1) It improved the Redskins QB depth immediately with John Beck getting released.
2) With RGIII’s style of play, he could end up like Michael Vick as a guy that can’t be counted on to play 16 games every year. I like Cousins’ upside as a guy that can step in and win games.
3) If he does show well in back up duty, they can trade Cousins and help recoup a pick or two that they gave up in the trade to get RGIII.
4) The talking heads always talk about “value” picks. If the Redskins had Cousins rated as the 3rd best QB in the draft and an early 2nd round talent, then it’s huge value to get a guy like that on Day 3 of the draft. I know that the Redskins have gotten solid players each of the past two drafts in the 4th round (Perry Riley & Roy Helu). But, I think this pick will work out in the long run.

There’s only controversy because people write articles about controversy.
Lets not turn a pig into a princess
